Portimão has outstandingly beautiful, fine sandy beaches, and it is also a city with an important historical legacy. For some time, its industrial development centred on the production of canned fish and dried fruits. However, in the last decades it has become a very popular tourist destination, ideal for enthusiasts of fishing, diving and other nautical sports.
Housed in an old cannery, this museum traces the story of the canning industry and its importance in society. It is one of the most distinguished museums in Portugal, with national and international prizes on its curriculum. Visiting the Museum, you will can see a life-size representation of the daily work in the cannery and hear the famous siren that sounded through the city to alert the townspeople to the arrival of the fish.
In spite of its similarity with the Portuguese word “alvorada”, meaning drawn, it comes from the Arabic Al-Bur - the name given it by the Arabs during their occupation. Dating back to these times are the ruins of a castle, destroyed by the big earthquake of 1755 and which for 500 years had served as a Fort defending the coast. In spite of the growing wave of tourism, this typical fishing village seems to have almost stopped in time.
The Ria de Alvor is one of the most important wetland ecosystems. A stretch of almost 1500 hectares, this riverside landscape made up of estuary, marshlands, saltpans, dunes and peninsular makes this area a diverse natural habitat for protected species.
CThe Santa Catarina Fort, built during the reign of King Filipe II on the site of the Hermitage dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. From here, you can enjoy a great view of the river and marina.
